ICL's head of advanced research, Bill O'Riordan, has described a winning multimedia system as one with 14 elements: general authoring (business and technical), hypermedia authoring, business presen- tation product, large graphics library, paint package, easy to use animator package, clip art, audio editor with library, video editor, file conversion, fonts, 1/0 device drivers, database and database manage- ment, and networking capability. Many of these are at various stages of develop- ment worldwide. There are several problems that need to be surmounted, including the requirement for very high-powered engines, compression stand- ards, the availability of low-cost support systems, application development tools and the ability of dif- ferent systems to co-exist with each other.
